{"id":1443,"date":"2021-02-26T21:20:25","date_gmt":"2021-02-26T21:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dbltakesports.com\/?p=1443"},"modified":"2021-03-04T03:59:04","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T03:59:04","slug":"renee-montgomery-owns-stake-in-atlanta-dream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbltakesports.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/26\/renee-montgomery-owns-stake-in-atlanta-dream\/","title":{"rendered":"Renee Montgomery owns stake in Atlanta Dream"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After a tumultuous year dealing with Atlanta Dream co-owner Kelly Loeffler&#8217;s insensitive comments about the <a href=\"https:\/\/dbltakesports.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/18\/wnba-return-plans-feature-bold-commitment-to-social-justice\/\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> movement, WNBA players are finally getting vindication. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2020\/07\/10\/sen-kelly-loeffler-continues-rip-black-lives-matter-says-she-wont-sell-stake-wnba-team\/\">Loeffler&#8217;s actions<\/a> put the spotlight on her ownership of the Dream with many players such as Renee Montgomery calling for her removal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a move that most people think is right, the WNBA and NBA Boards of Governors have unanimously approved the sale of the Atlanta Dream to Larry Gottesdiener, Chairman of Northland, an industry-leading&nbsp;national&nbsp;<em>real estate<\/em>&nbsp;firm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three-member investor group is comprised of former Dream star Renee Montgomery, Northland President and Chief Operating Officer Suzanne Abair, and Gottesdiener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two-time WNBA champion Renee Montgomery will be the first former player to become both an owner and executive of a WNBA team. Montgomery sat out the 2020 season to focus on social justice issues and recently announced her retirement from the league after 11 seasons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy Dream has come true,\u201d said Renee Montgomery. \u201cBreaking barriers for minorities and women by being the first former WNBA player to have both a stake in ownership and a leadership role with the team is an opportunity that I take very seriously. I invite you to join me as the Dream builds momentum in Atlanta!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 2007, the Dream has qualified for the WNBA Playoffs eight times and has reached the WNBA Finals three times. The team\u2019s former owners, Dream Too LLC, the Atlanta Dream ownership group, purchased the team in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the unanimous WNBA and NBA votes, today marks a new beginning for the Atlanta Dream organization and we are very pleased to welcome Larry Gottesdiener and Suzanne Abair to the WNBA,\u201d said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI admire their passion for women\u2019s basketball, but more importantly, have been impressed with their values,&#8221; Englebert continued.&nbsp;&#8220;I am also thrilled that former WNBA star Renee Montgomery will be joining the ownership group as an investor and executive for the team.&nbsp;Renee is a trailblazer who has made a major impact both in the game and beyond.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a privilege to join a team of inspiring women who strive for excellence on the court and equity off the court,\u201d said Larry Gottesdiener. \u201cI would like to express my gratitude to Commissioner Engelbert, Commissioner Silver, and the WNBA and NBA Boards of Governors for the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Brock and Kelly Loeffler commented on the transaction saying, &#8220;Ten years ago we stepped up to keep the Dream in Atlanta, as an important asset for a vibrant and diverse city.
