So he’s someone that we’ve known for a long time.

“And it’s weird because you see him in different environments, you get a different version of him, which I think is pretty cool. Obviously, he was that prolific that he spent some time with the prep school out there in Utah and then goes to a school out there in Utah as well. And you just see him in different situations where, for Team USA, he’s got to be a defender, he’s got to be a leader, and he still wins MVP and a gold medal there. Richie Saunders gets injured, he’s got to be more of a force offensively. He’s got to be someone who’s creating off the ball. So he’s evolved but always been impactful.”

Dawkins said that ability to adapt only strengthened the Wizards’ confidence that AJ Dybantsa could succeed regardless of the role he was asked to play.

“For us, we just studied him every single part of the way,” Dawkins said. “And when you bring him in for a workout and put him in situations where we want to grill our guys and put him in those situations where we can finish answering those dots that we’ve had, it was pretty obvious at that point that he’s the person we want, and the player lived up to that as well.”

Talent was only part of what sold the Wizards. Dawkins said another quality stood out almost immediately.

“I think right away, his connectability.” That showed up during Dybantsa’s first meeting with the organization.

“I think that combine, it was a pretty fun first introduction just to learn the maturity that he brings,” Dawkins said. “We didn’t get the standard questions from AJ. He’s just curious and mature and asked some really deep questions, and it allowed us to get to know him on a different level.”

That impression was reinforced through conversations with coaches, staff members and teammates who knew Dybantsa best.

“When you go on campus and you talk to the staff and you talk to his teammates, they care about him,” Dawkins said. “He poured into them and they poured into him. And he’s not an individual, he was about the team. Sometimes you have players that have been put on pedestals for a long time and don’t understand that, but that’s not who he is.

“He’s obviously a high-level worker. You’re not going to get better at the rate he got better and sustain that.”

Unable to sleep the night before the draft, Dawkins found himself revisiting some of his earliest scouting reports on Dybantsa.

“It was weird. Literally last night, couldn’t sleep, as you can imagine,” Dawkins said. “I’m sitting in my living room. I’m like, ‘Alright, I’m just going to go read through my reports one more time, go all the way back.’

“And the first thing I have is their name, their size, position. The first thing I wrote for him was, ‘Competitor who plays the right way.’ That spoke to me. I know he can do all the other stuff, but that’s the very first thing that I saw. And for a player that was that talented, it was like, ‘He’s the guy.'”

Long before Commissioner Adam Silver announced the Wizards were on the clock, Dawkins had already identified the qualities he believed separated AJ Dybantsa. Years later, after watching his development, learning more about who he was and putting him through the pre-draft process, that first impression never changed.

Why AJ Dybantsa?
