The Washington Mystics extended their winning streak to three games <\/a>with a victory over the Connecticut Sun, continuing their climb up the WNBA standings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the season ended today, Washington would be in the playoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the Mystics’ locker room, though, that isn’t the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the team’s recent play has strengthened its postseason outlook<\/a>, the Mystics continue to approach each game with the same mindset they’ve carried throughout the season: stay focused on the present and let the results take care of themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head coach Sydney Johnson said that philosophy was established long before the Mystics found themselves in the playoff picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You just can’t get too far down the road,” Johnson said. “We started the season understanding that this is a league that, 44 games, that’s a long run. So in order to establish yourself in this league, there’s got to be some consistency. For us, it’s our togetherness, our toughness, win or lose. If we hold that, we think good things will happen, especially as we get better.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than allowing the standings to dictate their mindset, Johnson believes maintaining that consistency has been the foundation of the team’s progress throughout the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shakira Austin echoed the same sentiment, explaining that staying locked into the moment is essential in a league where every game presents a new challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That’s just the league that we’re in,” Austin said. “You have to take every game one game at a time. You can break it into sections a little just to know what you have in the future, but you have to show up because thinking about the past or thinking about the future will really distract you from the moment. At the end of the day, anybody can win.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austin’s perspective reflects an identity the Mystics have built all season. While their recent success has naturally fueled conversations about playoff positioning, the team’s internal focus hasn’t shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, Washington has remained committed to the habits that have helped fuel its recent stretch: staying together, playing with toughness and concentrating on the game directly in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The standings may continue to change over the final weeks of the regular season, but the Mystics have shown little interest in chasing scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their attention remains exactly where it has been since opening night: one game at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
