For 73 years, PGA TOUR-sanctioned golf had a home in Akron, Ohio, the hometown of LeBron James. When the Kaulig Companies Championship concluded at Firestone Country Club in July, that historic run appeared to have reached its end, with the PGA TOUR Champions event moving to Newport Beach, California in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less than two months later, the PGA TOUR found a new path forward at Firestone through a partnership with the LeBron James Family Foundation. The inaugural LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational, set for July 6-7, 2027, will combine golf, youth engagement, mentorship and fundraising while maintaining the TOUR\u2019s presence at the historic course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a partnership that makes sense on several levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A New Chapter at Firestone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Firestone\u2019s relationship with professional golf extends well beyond its most recent PGA TOUR Champions event. The Akron course has hosted three PGA Championships and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, where Tiger Woods won eight times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That history makes the Foundation\u2019s role in extending the TOUR\u2019s presence at Firestone particularly significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor many years, PGA TOUR events at Firestone have been a staple of our community, benefiting our hometown and bringing people together,\u201d LeBron James Family Foundation Executive Director Michele Campbell said. \u201cThe LeBron James Family Foundation is very proud to be part of preserving the PGA TOUR\u2019s presence in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating Opportunity Through Golf<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Preserving that presence, however, does not mean replicating the type of event Firestone has traditionally hosted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students from the Foundation\u2019s I PROMISE program<\/a> will participate in off-course mentorship with professional golfers who have advanced through the PGA TOUR\u2019s Pathway to Progression Pro-Bound Five program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Invitational will also include amateur and professional competition on Firestone\u2019s South Course, with the professional competition featuring Pro-Bound Five alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pathway to Progression<\/a> is the PGA TOUR\u2019s player development initiative focused on expanding opportunities for golfers from historically underrepresented communities. Through Pro-Bound Five, the top five eligible players in the final APGA Collegiate Ranking gain membership access to the APGA Tour, creating a path to competitive professional golf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-Bound Five players also receive player development stipends and supplemental resources to assist with expenses associated with pursuing professional golf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure allows the partnership to create opportunities at different stages. I PROMISE students gain exposure to golf and opportunities surrounding the sport, while emerging professional golfers receive another competitive platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe PGA TOUR believes golf can create opportunity, change lives and bring communities together,\u201d PGA TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp said. \u201cBy connecting young people in Akron with our sport and supporting talented, up-and-coming athletes pursuing their dreams through our Pathway to Progression program, we are creating an event that honors Firestone\u2019s history and legacy while helping shape golf\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the Partnership Fits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For James and his foundation, the connection begins with Akron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The LeBron James Family Foundation has spent years building programs and resources for students and families in his hometown. The Invitational extends that work into a sport James has also begun exploring personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James recently launched a YouTube golf channel <\/a>documenting his journey into the game, something the PGA TOUR highlighted in announcing the partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His growing interest in golf alone, however, is not what makes the partnership work. The stronger connection is between the organizations\u2019 existing priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PGA TOUR unveiled plans in August to strengthen its philanthropic strategy around national priorities that include youth, access and opportunity. The LeBron James Family Foundation already has an established network of students and families in Akron, while the TOUR brings its player development programs and longstanding relationship with Firestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Invitational brings those pieces together in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Firestone, it creates a new chapter after the departure of a longtime tournament. For I PROMISE students and emerging golfers, it creates opportunities on and off the course. And for the PGA TOUR and James\u2019 foundation, it creates a partnership rooted in a community where both already have a presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After 73 years, PGA TOUR golf at Firestone is changing, but it isn\u2019t disappearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
