For years, John Wall was synonymous with basketball in Washington. Now, the former Washington Wizards star is stepping into a new role in the city that helped define his NBA career.
Howard University announced Wall has been named President of Basketball Operations for the men’s basketball program, joining head coach Kenneth Blakeney and General Manager & NIL Strategist Daniel G. Marks as part of the program’s leadership structure.
According to the university, John Wall will assist with roster construction, talent evaluation and player mentorship while also gaining experience in areas tied to the modern business of college basketball, including NIL matters, revenue sharing, budget management and agent negotiations.
The move represents another step in Wall’s transition into life after basketball, something he spoke candidly about in a previous conversation with Double Take Sports.
Months ago, Wall told said his ultimate goal was to become an NBA general manager while also sharing with us that he was learning to embrace retirement and life beyond playing. Now, with Howard giving him a front office leadership opportunity, those comments carry even more weight.
“We call our program The Dream Factory because we believe anything is possible for the young men who commit to playing at Howard,” Blakeney said in a statement. “When John served as our honorary captain this season, we learned his dream was to run an NBA front office. Given his expertise and community ties, this opportunity became a natural fit. I look forward to this role serving as a launching pad for his NBA executive career.”
Wall’s addition further elevates a Howard program that has quietly become one of the most successful mid-major programs in college basketball under Blakeney. The Bison have reached the NCAA Tournament three times in the last four seasons and secured the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory earlier this year against UMBC.
Howard also becomes a fitting bridge between two important parts of Wall’s basketball identity: Washington, DC and leadership.
Selected No. 1 overall in the 2010 NBA Draft, Wall helped lead the Wizards to their most successful stretch in decades, including back-to-back playoff series victories in 2014 and 2015. He earned five consecutive NBA All-Star selections from 2014-18 and still holds franchise records in assists and steals.
Even after retirement, Wall has remained deeply connected to the game. Alongside broadcasting appearances with Amazon Prime Video, The Association and Monumental Sports Network, while also continuing his community work. He was also announced Wednesday as the Washington Wizards’ representative for the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery.

Wall has reportedly already begun working with Howard during the transfer portal cycle, helping evaluate prospective players and participating in strategy sessions with staff.
“Stepping into this role is something I’m truly excited about,” John Wall said in a statement. “Washington, DC has always been my second home, and it means a lot to me to be able to come back and pour into a community that’s given me so much. Howard is an HBCU program that’s proving to the world that Black Excellence has no limits.”
For Wall, the next phase of basketball may look different than the one fans grew accustomed to seeing on the court. But if Howard’s latest move is any indication, his impact on the game may be far from over.
