Mystics Bolster Staff with New Coaching Hires

The Washington Mystics are gearing up for the 2025 WNBA season with a fresh look on the sidelines. Head Coach Sydney Johnson has officially rounded out his coaching staff with two new hires: Emre Vatansever and Jessie Miller, both joining as assistant coaches. The team also announced that long-time assistant Shelley Patterson will take on a new role as Head of Domestic Scouting.

These moves come as the Mystics are stepping into a new chapter with a new general manager and head coach that have their own vision for the franchise.

“I am thrilled to welcome Emre and Jessie to our Mystics staff,” said Coach Johnson. “They bring extensive coaching experience from both the WNBA and international levels, with a strong emphasis on player development. Their ability to build strong, meaningful relationships with players, coupled with a commitment to innovation and adaptability, keeps pace with the evolving needs of the WNBA’s next generation.”

Emre Vatansever: Offensive Strategist and Proven Leader

Vatansever brings a wealth of experience and a championship pedigree to the Mystics. He most recently served as interim head coach and general manager of the Chicago Sky in 2023, leading the team to its fifth straight playoff appearance. Before stepping into the interim role, he was part of the Sky’s coaching staff for over five seasons, playing a key role in their 2021 WNBA Championship run.

His WNBA journey began with the Seattle Storm (2015-2017), where he worked closely with stars like Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd. Internationally, Vatansever’s résumé includes stints with the Turkish national team and Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi, further showcasing his global coaching perspective.

Jessie Miller: Defensive Mindset and Player Development Expertise

Jessie Miller brings a sharp eye for talent and a track record of developing elite guards. She joins the Mystics after serving as an assistant with the Indiana Fever, where she worked closely with top draft pick Caitlin Clark during the 2023-2024 seasons. Miller also had an earlier stint with the Fever (2017-2019) and spent a decade with the Chicago Sky in various coaching and basketball operations roles.

Miller’s international experience includes head coaching roles in Germany, and her playing career includes four years as a starter at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by five professional seasons overseas.

Shelley Patterson Transitions to Scouting Leadership

After nearly three decades on the sidelines, Shelley Patterson will step into a strategic new role as Head of Domestic Scouting. Patterson’s coaching career includes successful runs with the Mystics, New York Liberty, and Minnesota Lynx, where she contributed to four WNBA titles during her tenure with the Lynx.

With these additions, the Mystics are positioning themselves well for the 2025 season, blending fresh perspectives with seasoned expertise to elevate the team’s performance on and off the court.
