Preview: 2025 Truist Championship Set for Historic Showdown in Philly

The PGA TOUR heads to Philadelphia for the first time in seven years as the 2025 Truist Championship tees off on Thursday, May 8th at the iconic Wissahickon Course at Philadelphia Cricket Club—the oldest private club in the United States. As the sixth Signature Event of the season, the tournament boasts one of the strongest fields of the year, headlined by World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, who looks to defend his title and make PGA TOUR history.

McIlroy, a four-time Truist Championship winner (2010, 2015, 2021, 2024), is chasing his fifth victory at the event—something only 13 players in TOUR history have ever achieved at a single tournament. With three wins already this season, including The Masters, the Northern Irishman is in peak form and aims to extend his dominance in Signature Events.

Justin Thomas, fresh off a win at the RBC Heritage, returns with momentum. Now ranked World No. 5, Thomas has posted five top-10s in ten starts and leads the TOUR in Birdie or Better Percentage – Fairway. A win this week would make him only the second player, alongside Scottie Scheffler, to capture back-to-back Signature Events in the modern era.

Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth add to the star power. Schauffele, the defending PGA Champion, will look to build confidence ahead of his title defense next week. Spieth, who placed fourth at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson, continues his search for a breakthrough Signature Event win and needs a strong finish as he plays out the final year of his Tournament Winners exemption.

The field is stacked with talent and storylines:

  • 44 of the top 50 players in the world are in the field.
  • Seven past champions of the Truist Championship, including Rickie FowlerMax Homa, and Wyndham Clark return.
  • Five past FedExCup champions are competing.

Rising stars like Andrew Novak, who leads the TOUR with four top-three finishes this season, and Michael Thorbjornsen, a breakout performer from the Aon Swing 5, will look to make their mark.

Set against the classic architecture of A.W. Tillinghast’s Wissahickon Course, which last hosted a major professional event in 2016, the tournament offers a unique test. This week also marks the final time the Truist Championship will be played outside of Quail Hollow Club until at least 2026, making this stop in Philly all the more special.

As international players continue to dominate the season—with 12 wins in 20 events—and first-time champions rise, the 2025 Truist Championship promises drama, history, and elite golf at every turn.

Can Rory make it five? Will JT stay hot? Or will a new name rise in the City of Brotherly Love? All eyes are on Philadelphia.
