The PGA TOUR returns to historic Colonial Country Club this week for the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge, the 24th stop of the regular season and the TOUR’s final swing through Texas. The field is stacked with talent, including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Davis Riley, and hometown favorite Jordan Spieth.
Scheffler Eyes Three-Peat Streak
Fresh off his victory at the PGA Championship, Scottie Scheffler enters Fort Worth as the undisputed player to beat. With 15 career PGA TOUR wins, including back-to-back titles at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson and the PGA Championship, the 28-year-old Texan is chasing his third consecutive win, a feat last accomplished by Dustin Johnson in 2017.
Scheffler has finished in the top three at Colonial each of the past three years, including a T2 last season. His dominance in 2025 continues to rewrite the record books, and he’s set to play his 500th PGA TOUR round on Thursday.
Riley Returns to Defend
Davis Riley captured his first individual PGA TOUR title at Colonial last year with a commanding five-shot victory over Scheffler and Keegan Bradley. Now ranked No. 42 in the FedExCup standings, Riley arrives with confidence after a runner-up finish at the PGA Championship, his best career major result.
A win this week would make Riley just the second player—after Ben Hogan—to go back-to-back at Colonial.
Spieth Still a Threat at Colonial
No player has been more consistently successful at the Charles Schwab Challenge than Jordan Spieth. The 13-time PGA TOUR winner boasts eight top ten finishes in twelve appearances, including a win in 2016 and three runner-up finishes.
While Spieth missed the cut at the PGA Championship and hasn’t won since 2022, Colonial has long been his comfort zone. With his Tournament Winners exemption set to expire this season, the stakes are high for the Texas native to make a move.
Field Highlights
Twenty of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are in the field, including Hideki Matsuyama, Tommy Fleetwood, and Maverick McNealy. Nine players are coming off top ten finishes at last week’s PGA Championship, making this one of the strongest non-signature fields of the season.
Rising stars to watch include:
- Neal Shipley, the 2024 Masters and U.S. Open low amateur, who earned a Champions’ Choice invite
- David Ford, making his pro debut after a record-setting senior season at UNC and a win at Colonial in the 2024 Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational
Tournament Traditions and Impact
The Charles Schwab Challenge continues its legacy as the TOUR’s longest-running event at a single venue. Since 1946, Colonial Country Club has tested the world’s best with its demanding layout, particularly the “Horrible Horseshoe” stretch on holes 3-5.
In addition to the Tartan Jacket and place on the Wall of Champions, this year’s winner will drive away in a custom 1992 Schwab Defender, a unique prize introduced by the tournament’s title sponsor.
