Top-ranked UConn opened its season in commanding fashion at the first-ever women’s basketball version of ESPN’s Armed Forces Classic, defeating No. 20 Louisville 79–66 in a matchup that showcased both the Huskies’ depth and their discipline.

Sarah Strong wasted no time making an impression, leading all scorers with 21 points and 9 rebounds while adding five assists and two blocks. Azzi Fudd found her rhythm early, chipping in 20 points, and KK Arnold and Kayleigh Heckel gave UConn a balanced attack with double-digit scoring of their own.

UConn set the tone from the opening tip, racing out to a double-digit lead behind crisp ball movement and aggressive defense. By halftime, the Huskies had built a cushion that proved too much for Louisville to erase. The Cardinals made a push in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to ten behind strong rebounding from Laura Ziegler, who grabbed 16 boards, but UConn’s composure down the stretch sealed the win.

Despite a cold night from three-point range, the Huskies’ effort and execution carried them through. Their defense forced key turnovers, and their front-court presence set the tone physically from start to finish.

For UConn, the victory extends their streak of season-opening wins and sends an early reminder of why they’re the nation’s top team. For Louisville, it was a hard-fought test that offered plenty to build on as the Cardinals look ahead to the rest of their schedule.
